Treatment Goals & Modalities

When choosing which treatment to pick for brain-related issues, there are two important treatment concepts that need to be factored into the decision-making process. Those factors include the treatment goal and the treatment modality used to obtain the intended goal.

Treatment goals are typically based on one of three approaches:

1.Traditional view: traditional therapy that helps develop coping skills to compensate for brain dysfunction

2.Symptom reduction: Symptoms are decreased via biological means, such as medications

3.Cognitive Repair: An approach to healing that addresses the root cause/s of the issue and repairs the brain

There are difference treatment tools, treatment procedures, treatment programs and treatment processes. Each has its own treatment goal.

Treatment tools are akin to tools that a carpenter or mechanic will have in their tool kit (i.e. hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches). Each tool allows the skilled user to accomplish a particular goal. For example – driving a nail into a piece of wood, placing a screw into metal or wood, or loosening/tightening a nut. Typically, you would not use a screwdriver to loosen a nut.

Treatment procedures are different from treatment tools and generally employ a set of steps that use specific tools to accomplish a particular outcome. For example – diagnosing a disease or removing a tumor uses specific procedures and specific tools to accomplish positive outcomes.

Treatment programs are similar to treatment procedures, but generally contain a set of treatment procedures that are targeted at accomplishing a particular goal within a limited range of dysfunction. These goals are based upon assumptions of the treatment model. For example – certain cancer treatment programs specialize on different types of cancer and not others.

treatment process incorporates all of the above with the intention of addressing a wider variation of the issues and creates a platform for appropriate healing and repair.

NeurCodex/NeuroCoach a complete process and uses multiple tools and programs.
Treatment goal – addresses root causes and cognitive repair.
NeuroCodeX® is a comprehensive neuro-imaging and neuro assessment that analyzes over 300-brain functions. The analysis generates measurements from all brain networks and brain systems to determine how cognitive abilities and dysfunction affect an individual’s overall behavior and brain performance.

NeuroCoach® is a program that provides targeted exercises and tools during each session and is designed to measure and improve impulse control, memory, decision-making, judgment, attention, and “being present”.

The programs focus on overcoming brain based dysfunctions that affect the individual’s ability to think clearly and stay sober. This also happens to be one of the most overlooked causes for repeated relapses.

BioFeedback (Tool-Symptom Reduction)
In isolation does not allow cognitive repair nor determine which brain system is dysfunctional.
Self guided tool-teaches individual control ofmuscles tension, pain, brainwaves other functions. Feedback process for relaxation, visualization, brain signal control.  X X
NeuroFeedback (Tool-Symptom Reduction)
Targets specific areas of the brain, but does not provide cognitive repair in isolation, nor does it determine what brain systems or which brain networks may be dysfunctional
Also called neurotherapy or neurobiofeedback, and is a type of biofeedback that displays EEG activity of the brain. EEG neurofeedback uses sensors placed on the scalp to measure and illustrate brainwave activity. This tool can help teach self-regulation. X       X
Amen Clinic uses a procedure –  to identify or diagnose issues.
Treatment goal – symptom reduction. Medications are prescribed in order to overcome brain blood flow and metabolic issues.
There is no program offered to remediate cognitive brain repair.
The Amen Clinic uses a procedure to look at the brain through a SPECT Scan (single photon emission computed tomography) to determine blood flow and metabolism within the brain structure. It does not offer remediation; it merely allows a healthcare professional to see the structure of the brain, much like MRI and fMRI looks at the structure of the brain.   X     X
Brain Paint a program.
Treatment goal – symptom reduction
It is a one-size-fits-all program based on canned protocol.
This program uses neurotherapy (a tool).

It uses automated (canned) protocols in its use of neurofeedback. These protocols are pre-designed and are not based QEEG brain mapping or other neuro-imaging technologies for individualized results. Nor does the program have the ability to look beyond standardized alpha-theta protocols.
